The Aga Khan University (AKU) is a progressive organization committed to excellence in education, research and community service. It is a private, not-for-profit University that offers an exceptional educational experience and empowers graduates to be catalytic leaders. It is a provider not only of higher education but also conducts research of particular salience to the countries in which it serves and the developing world more widely at internationally accepted academic standards. Occupying a central place in the Aga Khan Development Network, its overall mandate is to promote the welfare of the people of developing countries, where no talented and ambitious student should be denied access to education as a result of financial limitation. Since 2000, the University has been increasingly fulfilling its mandate as an international university through its programmes and research in nursing, medicine, and educational development in East Africa (Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda). Based in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, the Institute for Educational Development works across East Africa and in the context of the East African Community, it will be extending its reach to Rwanda and Burundi in the near future.

The opportunity now exists for five senior leadership positions in the Institute for Educational Development, East Africa (IED, EA):

• Associate Professor/Full Professor, Science Education
• Associate Professor/Full Professor, Mathematics Education
• Associate Professor/Full Professor, Early Childhood Education and Development
• Associate Professor/Full Professor, Assessment and Evaluation
• Head of Academic Administration

These appointments will play a leading role in advancing the Institute’s innovative Teaching, Research and Scholarship. The Head of Academic Administration will provide senior academic leadership and management of the institute in support of its strategic and academic development.


The University's Institute for Educational Development, East Africa (IED, EA) was established in East Africa in 2006. Based in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, it has an East African mandate to develop institutional capacity, leadership and quality governance in education, and engage in situational relevant research through collaboration with local, regional and international institutions of higher education.

IED, EA aims to establish itself as a unique resource in the fields of educational and professional development, research, scholarship and policy analysis, contributing to or complementing major governmental initiatives to improve the quality of education in Tanzania, Kenya, and Uganda.

The Institute’s programmes include:

• Certificate in Education
• Master in Education currently offering specializations in Teacher Education and Educational Leadership and Management.

The MEd Programme is under review and will be offering new specialisms in areas of the new appointments advertised. The Institute will develop a PhD programme, planning for which is scheduled to begin in 2012.

Research at IED, EA
Research projects at IED, EA are designed to address issues of poverty alleviation for the purpose of improving educational achievement, quality and equality in East Africa. There are two research networks at IED that provide the intellectual hub of academics working in areas of:

• Multi-literacies in Multilingual Education
• Inclusion and Equity in Education

Our rationale for our developing Research Network in multi-literacies is that in the educational reform context of East Africa, there is considerable emphasis on the quality of learning, in particular improving Basic and Upper Secondary Education in areas of language and literacy, numeracy, science and ICT skills. This is evident from, as examples, new development bids proposed by USAID ( docs/PDACP706.pdf), and the World Bank (2011, These have also been flagged as priority areas by the respective Ministries of Education in their dialogue with senior management at IED, EA.

The work within our Inclusion and Equity in Education Research Network is important because improving access to quality education raises issues of inclusion and equity so that all learners may access quality education irrespective of gender, HIV/AIDS status, and other forms of exclusion such as learning disabilities.

IED, EA has a tremendous opportunity to develop research capacity within the region as currently much of the research is conducted from outside by international agencies. The successful candidates will need to bring credibility to our research networks and programmes and act as champions for IED’s research initiatives.

Guiding Principles
IED, EA is guided in its work by the following:

1. The IED, EA will be committed to the University’s own founding principles; that its programmes must be accessible to all, that they must be relevant to local needs, that they have positive impact on the individuals and communities they serve and, above all, that they must be of the highest quality.

2. The IED, EA will work closely with governments to assist them in meeting their Education

3. For all goals and targets, it will ensure that all participants on its programmes are prepared as change agents effectively with other teachers and educators in improving the quality of education, and it will develop programmes that are contextually relevant and based on areas of high need.

4. The IED, EA will be guided by a belief that teachers are central to the improvement of quality in education and raising school achievement. Similarly, it believes that educational leaders, such as school heads and inspectors, are also pivotal in enabling classroom teachers and others to contribute to quality improvement, and that these leaders also deserve professional development opportunities.

5. The Institute will not become a provider of mass education. Governments are the only organizations that have the ability and responsibility to perform this role. IED, EA should assist governments in their tasks through its capacity and research building programmes and projects.

The Institute aims to become a leader in educational reform and improvement in the developing East African Community by increasing the efficiency and efficacy of schools and other educational institutions and in research capacity building. Ultimately, its goal is to make a substantial contribution to human well-being by improving social, economic, and moral development of individuals and communities in the countries of the region, but especially in Tanzania.


A) Associate Professor or Full Professor
For candidates with a strong profile and extensive portfolio, appointments will be made at the full professor level. This will require evidence of the ability:

• To make a significant contribution to the Institute’s research profile and research strategy
• To promote, and lead on, research activities at national and international levels
• (Working in collaboration with the Head, Research), to provide strategic research leadership for the Institute
• To provide leadership in establishing links and, as appropriate, consultancies in his/her specialist area on behalf of the Institute with a range of external national and international stakeholders (national and international governments, and local government ministries/departments, charities, NGOs, international donors etc.)
• To attract externally funded projects
• To contribute to the academic leadership of the Institute
• To contribute to Masters and doctoral level teaching, supervision and examining.

The ideal candidates will be able to demonstrate:

• An international reputation for leading high-quality research in their specialist field
• A strong track record in attracting and managing externally-funded research
• A readiness and capability to develop a portfolio of research, evaluation and consultancy work to international governments and development agencies
• Experience of academic leadership
• Teaching excellence at the graduate level.

Whilst we wish to attract senior faculty to provide leadership in the Institute for Educational Development, we would also encourage early to mid career scholars with a highly promising rising profile in research and publication to apply. All applicants should have a strong commitment to research and publication and to graduate teaching, with a commitment to securing external support for his or her research.

Selection Criteria

• Ability to work effectively and collegially with other academics
• Experience of university governance and management.

B) Head of Academic Administration
Reporting to the Director, Institute for Educational Development (IED, EA), this position will provide senior academic leadership and management in support of the strategic development of the Institute through achievement of key objectives and the delivery of the financial plan. This position is part of the Senior Management Team, alongside Head, Research, Head, Teaching, Learning & Assessment, Head, Marketing and Continuing Education, Head, Finance. Responsibilities include:

• To work with the Director, IED, EA on financial and academic administration issues, providing information to support decision making, reflecting Institute, University and regional and national policy
• To have oversight of administrative staff who support the research, teaching and administrative needs of academic staff
• To oversee the teaching and learning administration of the Institute and support internal and external quality assurance audits and to work closely with the Head, Marketing and Continuing Education on this.
• To support the Director and the Finance Office in ensuring the financial integrity of the Institute through academic development, planning, implementation and delivery of IED’s budget to support its projects, programmes, and research.
• To seek grants and other funding opportunities in support of IED, EA activities, draft relevant documents and proposals
• To provide updates on national and regional trends & evaluate funding opportunities that have potential for IED, EA
• To manage IED, EA projects and ongoing relationships with organisations
• To write high quality reports and papers and prepare presentations
• To deputise for the Director at strategic meetings to support IED objectives
• To be involved in critiquing business cases for new programmes, professional development activity and bids to external agencies.
• To support strategic alliances and networking (national, regional and international)
• As this is a varied role, the above list is not exhaustive and the role holder will be expected to undertake any work commensurate with the grade.

Position Requirements:
• A Masters degree in Business Administration or a relevant professional and academic qualification

• A minimum of 5 years experience at a senior level in an academic setting from an internationally respected University

• Project management, grant writing and policy analysis experience, or equivalent.

• Excellent interpersonal skills.

• Excellent writing and presentation skills.

• Publications in a relevant area and experience in a development context will be an advantage but not essential.


This will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. There are annual increments following satisfactory Appraisal Performance Review.

Medical coverage
Aga Khan University offers medical benefits as per the existing medical cover, which includes both in-patient and outpatient cover for self, spouse and three dependent children up to the age of 18. This service is currently being offered through Jubilee Insurance, the details of which will be provided by the Human Resources Division.

Life & Accident Insurance
After confirmation, you are covered under the Organization's Group Life and Personal Accident Insurance Policy up to a maximum limit of 4 times annual salary.

Social Security Fund
You are eligible to join a Social Security Fund, details of which will be provided by the Human Resources Division.

Annual Leave

You are entitled to 23 working days leave per annum to be taken as per the applicable Policy.

Annual leave must be approved in advance by your supervisor and the Human Resources Division prior to it being taken.

Maternity Leave
A female employee shall be entitled to maternity leave, as per the applicable Policy.

Sick Leave
You are entitled to sick leave subject to the production of a certificate of incapacity to work signed by a registered and practicing medical practitioner as per applicable policy.

Sick leave with full pay for up to sixty three (63) days and thereafter sick leave with half pay salary for up to sixty three (63) days, in each leave cycle.

If by the end of the sick leave period you have not resumed duty on account of illness, the University reserves the right to assess your suitability/competency for employment and may terminate this contract.

Relocation Expenses
Aga Khan University has a generous relocation expenses scheme for eligible staff which covers removal and travelling expenses connected with relocation.

Leave Passage
The University also operates a leave passage scheme to eligible staff for the staff member and dependants once in every 2 years, back to their home country.

House Allowance
The University operates a house allowance schemes to all its staff, commensurate with grade at the point of entry.

Length of Appointment
The University operates both permanent and fixed term contracts.

Living & Working in the Developing World

Dar es Salaam is a beautiful, friendly and safe city positioned on the coast of East Africa. With its great relaxing atmosphere, the city is the largest city in Tanzania and is comprised of a mix of African, Muslim, South Asian and European influences, picturesque harbour, beaches, markets and historical buildings. It is also the country’s richest city and a regionally important economic centre. Today, the Dar es Salaam Region has a population of over 2.8 million. A city with exceptional weather and proximity to some of the most beautiful landscapes in Africa, Dar es Salaam boasts a large expatriate community, good restaurants and a very welcoming culture. Nonetheless, it remains a part of the developing world and as such, still struggles with some of the challenges associated with modernization and growth.

Organization Overview


Founded and guided by His Highness the Aga Khan, the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) brings together a number of development agencies, institutions, and programs that work primarily in the poorest parts of Asia and Africa. AKDN is a contemporary endeavor of the Ismaili Imamat to realize the social conscience of Islam through institutional action. The AKDN has been active in East Africa for more than a hundred years, and Aga Khan schools and hospitals are well established and respected service providers. In 1999, AKU established the Advanced Nursing Studies program in Nairobi, Kampala and Dar es Salaam in order to offer to the region the expertise it had developed in Pakistan in providing professional education in this critical area.
